My Spring 2014 trip resumed this past week with 3 additional days of hiking in Death Valley. My additional time in the park was spent doing a 3 day backpacking trip with my friend Curtis (who had previously hiked Dantes View to Badwater with me) on a route that I had been planning for a long time. On the first day, we backpacked out to the mouth of Bighorn North. Bighorn North is the informal name I have given to the next major canyon north of Bighorn Gorge. On the second day, we day hiked up the entire length of Bighorn North, took a side trip to visit hard-to-reach Lost Canyon, and then hiked down Bighorn Gorge to complete a loop back to camp. On the third day, we backpacked back to our vehicle and drove home. Bighorn North had one nice section of narrows which perhaps equaled the beauty of Bighorn Gorge’s 2nd Narrows. Lost Canyon has lower narrows and upper narrows which are both amazing.
This was the first trip in which I used my new satellite messenger (DeLorme InReach) in order to keep in touch with family members through 2-way satellite text messages. The InReach also allowed friends and family to track my entire hike live on a map and see where I was at all times. Although using the InReach and getting it working required 3 hours of frustrating setup work at home, I was very pleased with the peace of mind that it gave me and am very happy with it. In addition to the 4 trip reports I still need to write from the February portion of my trip, I now have 2 more reports that will be added from this trip. Until I can get to the report, here are a few photos from our backpacking trip.
